Fundamentals of Digital Marketing: 5 Things That Matter

Strip away the tools, platforms and tactics and only five things decide whether online marketing works. Here they are, in order.

By Brittany Johnson · September 16, 2026 · 8 min read

Every tactic that ever worked worked because these five things were already in place underneath it.

There is a version of digital marketing that is all tools — which platform, which scheduler, which funnel builder. It is comforting because it feels like progress. It is also why people can be busy for a year and sell nothing. Underneath every tactic that has ever worked, five things were in place. Get these right and mediocre execution still makes money. Get them wrong and no tool saves you.

1. One specific person

'Small business owners' is not a person. 'A solo bookkeeper with eight clients who cannot take on a ninth without working weekends' is. The second one lets you write a sentence that stops them mid-scroll, because it describes their Tuesday.

Narrowing feels like shrinking your market. It does the opposite. A message aimed at everyone gets ignored by everyone, because nobody recognises themselves in it.

2. A promise you can state in one sentence

If someone cannot repeat what you do after hearing it once, they cannot recommend you and they cannot buy with confidence. The promise names the result and the person: what changes, for whom.

Write it down. Then read it out loud. If you need a second sentence to explain the first, it is not finished.

3. The same message everywhere

This is the fundamental almost nobody gets right. Your ad says one thing, the landing page says something slightly different, the emails use different language, and the sales call goes somewhere else entirely. Each piece may be fine. Together they lose people at every handover.

Consistency is not repetition. It means the promise, the person, and the main objection you answer stay the same from the first touch to the payment page. When they match, conversion goes up without a single new visitor.

4. One obvious next step

Every page should ask for exactly one thing. Not 'book a call or download the guide or follow me or read the blog.' Choice creates hesitation, and hesitation is a closed tab.

Pick the step that matches where the reader is. Someone who just discovered they have a problem is not booking a call. Someone comparing two providers is not downloading another PDF.

5. Follow-up that does the selling

Almost nobody buys the first time. The sale happens across several touches, and if you have no way to reach someone again, you paid for that visit and got nothing.

Follow-up does not mean nagging. It means answering, one at a time, the reasons someone did not buy today: price, timing, doubt that it works for them, doubt they will use it. Each of those is an email.

The order matters

These are numbered deliberately. You cannot write a promise without knowing who it is for. You cannot be consistent without a promise. You cannot pick a next step without a message. And follow-up only works when there is something worth following up about.

If something is not working, walk back down the list rather than adding another tactic on top. The break is almost always earlier than where it shows up.

The short version

  • Name one specific person, not a category.
  • State the promise in one sentence someone can repeat.
  • Keep the same promise from ad to payment page.
  • One next step per page — choice creates hesitation.
  • Follow-up answers objections one at a time; that's where sales happen.

Common questions

What is the most important fundamental?

Knowing exactly who you are talking to. Everything else is built on it, and a vague audience is the most common reason good offers sell badly.

Do these apply to a service business as much as a course?

Yes. The delivery changes; the fundamentals don't. A consultant, a coach, a course creator and an agency all need one person, one promise, one message, one next step and follow-up.

How do I know which fundamental is broken?

Follow the drop-off. Nobody clicking means the promise or the person is off. Clicks but no sign-ups means the page and the ad disagree. Sign-ups but no sales means follow-up isn't answering real objections.

Turn what you just read into an offer that actually sells

Getting all five aligned by hand takes weeks of rewriting, which is the exact problem this was built for. OfferConverter AI is a tool that builds your whole sales campaign from one set of answers about your offer. You tell it who you help, what you sell, and what result you deliver — and it writes your webinar or presentation script, your funnel pages, your follow-up emails, and your ad copy so every piece makes the same promise instead of contradicting each other.
